The Circuit has always been fond of Amber, one of the Netherlands’s more modern gifts to the world of music. Throughout the past decade, she has not only had one hit after another, but she has done what many have only dreamed they could do…cross over from the dance charts to the pop charts…bringing with her a hugely diverse fan base around the world. Although classical music has been her forte throughout her musical career, it is the remixed dance classics Sexual, The Need to be Naked, and now Just Like That that have put her at the top of the charts and made her a legend in Dance. Amber spoke in January to JustCircuit’s Shane Rogers and Victor Mauro in this exclusive interview.
Let’s jump right into it! Tell us why so many of your songs have “sexual” themes, or speak of sex.Oh, that’s only in your dirty little minds, of course, booger! (smiles) Many of my songs have themes that don’t have any sexual connotation. People just remember those that mention “breasts” or titles such as “Sexual.” I wrote “Sexual” in fifteen minutes! I wrote it out of a single perspective and had no idea that the Gay community would run with it. I had so many people say “What the hell was she thinking singing about “breasts” to the Gay community in another song. Others would sometimes say “Only Gay people listen to her music”, which of course isn’t true at all. I’ve been very lucky to have 11 Billboard hits on the pop charts, and not just the dance charts. It’s all about what you perceive the song to be. I wanted different themes on all of them.Tell us about your latest single release “Just Like That”.It’s actually a love story. It’s all about what someone means to you. When I started writing this song, I was writing of all negative, dark stuff. I was going through a difficult divorce. I could have gone to a psychiatrist, I guess, but instead I wrote about the experience. I tried to describe the dark colors of a relationship that was just not perfect, which is one of life’s realities. Something changed me, and I decided to continue the song writing about what it feels like to meet that RIGHT person. “Just Like That” is the third single release from my album on my own label, the JMCA label. So you’ve completely left the “Tommy Boy” label?Yes, I created my own label after having many creative differences with Tommy Boy records. I’m very thankful to have been released from Tommy Boy, as I also consider myself to be a multi-layered artist. I don’t want dance music to be a genre in which I’m pigeonholed. But isn’t that your most successful genre?Yes it has been. But now, with my own label, I can release and produce my music to my liking. My producer Wolfram Dettk (who is also my mother’s boyfriend) has been quite supportive of my independence. The song “Naked” on “My Kind of World” is exclusively Amber!Wait, you said your producer is your mother’s boyfriend? Yes, and he’s been great! When he became my producer, he and my mother became quite close. Then, they began dating, and the rest is history! I come from four generations of musical composers and conductors from The Netherlands. My great grandmother even founded an all girls group in 1901….well before the Spice Girls were here! My mother (Anne-Mieke de Vroomen) even wrote my song “Sacrificial Lamb”, which is on the “My Kind of World” compilation.Tell us what your favorite remixes are of “Just Like That.”I really like how the club mixes turned out on this song. They all work so well in the clubs. I do it for my fans who expect dance remixes from my songs, since they don’t usually start in the dance format. I like them all for different reasons. Jason Nevin’s mix kept my original version, which was “rock and dance.” DJ Rizo vs. Solar City moved me, and I liked it immediately. The Belmares & Preve mix was a higher energy mix that works extremely well in the clubs. I am so happy for such a big variety of extremely good mixes! What is the next big thing in music’s future, in your opinion? Satellite radio stations, like Sirius Radio, are really the next big thing. Regular rock stations are few and far between these days. It’s like six big FM stations are trying to split the entire music market. Satellite radio is less political for sure. With regular radio, it is so difficult for music to cross over. You have to have a radio promoter to help. It’s overly complicated. Before we go, would you like to say anything to our JustCircuit readers and members of the Circuit?I have so many fans in the Circuit who have shown such love and support over the past ten years! I hope you will truly enjoy my latest dance compilation, which is dedicated to you. I love you all so dearly!
